Ingredients:

  • 1 can (15 oz / 425g) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 cup (60g) breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup (60g) red onion, finely diced
  • 3 cloves (15g) garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp (30ml) soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp (15ml) maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp (15g) tomato paste
  • 1 tsp (2g) smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp (2g) ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp (1g) garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp (3g) salt
  • 1/4 tsp (1g) black pepper
  • 2 tbsp (30ml) oil

Instructions:

  1. Drain and rinse the black beans thoroughly. Pat them dry with a paper towel. Use a fork or potato masher to smash the beans in a mixing bowl until mostly smooth, leaving a few whole beans for texture.
  2. Fold in the diced onion, minced garlic, soy sauce, maple syrup, and tomato paste. Stir in the smoked paprika, cumin, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until spices are evenly distributed.
  3. Stir in the breadcrumbs gradually. Mix until the dough feels tacky and holds its shape. Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes to allow the breadcrumbs to hydrate.
  4. Divide the mixture into 4 to 6 equal portions and shape them into discs about 1 inch (2.5cm) thick.
  5. Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Gently place the patties in the pan and cook for 4-5 minutes per side. Flip only once, waiting until a dark mahogany crust forms.
